Czech this out: Palicova wins W60 Prerov; Fruhvirtova extends streak
It’s no secret that Czech Republic has a habit of producing an inordinate number of talented tennis players – especially on the women’s side of the game.
It was fitting, then, that not only did the biggest event in the last week of August take place on Czech soil but that two players from that country stole the headlines.
Barbora Palicova, who turned heads at the start of the year when she won the title at W15 Antalya aged 17, picked up her second professional title with a 6-2 1-6 6-0 victory over Burundi’s Sada Nahimana in the final of W60 Prerov.
The win propelled Palicova 42 places up the rankings to a career-high No. 296.
Brenda Fruhvirtova, who has been etching her name into the record books of late, scored a fourth straight title at W25 Braunschweig. In so doing, the 15-year-old won a 20th match in a row, putting her in top spot this year for win-streaks across men and women on the ITF World Tennis Tour and just one behind Nuria Parrizas Diaz’s 21-match win streak of 2020/21.
Fruhvirtova's triumph was her sixth title of the year and saw her become the first player ever to record six tournament triumphs before turning 16 years old.
There was more good news this week for the Fruhvirtova family as big sister, Linda, successfully qualified for the US Open main draw and will take on China’s Wang Xinyu in the opening round.
Five other teenagers scored wins on the World Tennis Tour this week, with victories for Croatia's Antonia Ruzic, Italy's Matilde Paoletti, Argentina's Solana Sierra, China's Li Zongyu and Finland's Laura Hietaranta.
