Former Junior Grand Slam champ McDonald makes World Tennis Tour moves
Former Roland Garros boys’ champion Niels McDonald continues to make his mark within the professional ranks after winning the biggest title of his career on the ITF World Tennis Tour at M25 Varnamo.
It was the 18-year-old’s second ITF World Tennis Tour title in as many weeks after the German conquered all before him at M15 Rosbach earlier this month – the first professional title of the teenager’s career.
By winning M25 Varnamo, McDonald is projected to rise to a new career-high No. 619 in the ATP Rankings (the exact ranking is dependent on results between then and now) during the next rankings update on 22 June.

McDonald is a former junior world No. 4 who won a Junior Grand Slam singles title at Roland Garros in 2025, becoming the first German player to win the boys’ title there since Daniel Elsner in 1997.
He defeated Max Schoenhaus in the final – the first all-German boys’ singles final at Roland Garros. Schoenhaus has also enjoyed success within the professional ranks since and earlier this year won his third ITF World Tennis Tour title at M25 Troisdorf.
The ITF leads the world in providing a global pathway for players – from our international junior tour through to the professional ITF World Tennis Tour. McDonald and Schoenhaus are just two beneficiaries of this.
