A fantastic moment awaits Serbia’s Teodora Kostovic after the teenager was drawn to face world No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka in the Wimbledon first round.

Her showdown with Sabalenka will be Kostovic’s Grand Slam main draw debut after she navigated three rounds of qualifying, having missed out on competing at this year's Australian Open and Roland Garros through qualifying agony.

Her success over China’s Lin Zhu in the final round of qualifying has proven a gateway to the game’s summit – and an enormous opportunity – with Sabalenka waiting to face the talented 18-year-old.

"I'm feeling great,” said Kostovic, who is currently ranked No. 184 in the WTA Rankings. “I’m feeling so good and so confident, and I feel I’m playing well also.

"I am enjoying every single moment here and I intend to enjoy every moment next week. I'm super happy to be playing a Grand Slam for the first time.”

While Kostovic will be appearing in the women’s singles main draw for the first time, she has previous experience of competing at Wimbledon having reached the quarter-finals of the Junior Championships twice.

Kostovic surged to the last eight in both 2024, where she lost to current world No. 17 Iva Jovic, and 2025 – her last appearance of a junior career which saw her reach No. 4 in the World Tennis Tour girls’ rankings.

Since then, Kostovic has advanced along the player pathway, winning her maiden World Tennis Tour title at W75 Kursumlijska Banja in August. By this stage she had already made her WTA main draw debut.

Kostovic, who also made her Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge debut in 2025, is one of many players to have reached financial assistance to help with her ongoing development through the Grand Slam Player Development Programme.

Th financial support came in the form of Grand Slam Player Grants, which are financed by the four Grand Slams with World Tennis modelling determining the players are selected. Kostovic is a three-time recipient with support totalling $75,000.

Furthermore, every year World Tennis selects talented players from developing tennis nations to join Grand Slam Player Development Programme Touring Teams. Those players then travel as a team and have access to high-performance coaches.

The Touring Team programme provides crucial support for talented players who might otherwise be unable to compete at the level they do. It also enables opportunities that financial constraints may otherwise prevent.

Kostovic was a member of a Touring Team on a couple of occasions, most notably to Europe in 2024 when she reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon’s Junior Championships.

A fantastic opportunity now presents itself in the modern day, one that perhaps was not on Kostovic’s radar a matter of days ago.

In many respects this is the essence of the World Tennis player pathway – powering future stars to chase their dreams.
