Seventeen-year-old Barbora Palicova is the latest player to keep an eye on from the seemingly endless production line of tennis talent emanating from Czech Republic.

Palicova, who climbed to a career-high junior ranking of No. 21 earlier this month, is already beginning to make her mark at the entry level of professional tennis after winning her first women’s title on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

She reached back-to-back finals at W15 Antalya this month, claiming a milestone maiden title on Sunday with a 6-3 7-6(2) triumph over Ilay Yoruk, just a week after Hurricane Tyra Black denied her victory in her first final appearance at the same venue.

At No. 818 in the world, Palicova is the 32nd highest-ranked Czech in the WTA rankings, highlighting the strength of the women’s game in the Central European country. (Fun fact: she’s also the fourth-highest-ranked Czech named Barbora… after No. 4 Krejickova, No. 419 Strycova and No. 798 Miklova).

Palicova is also one of six Czech players in that 32-strong group aged 17 or under, and joins fellow 17-year-old Linda Noskova, 16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova and 15-year-old Sara Bejlek in having won an ITF women’s singles title.

Meanwhile, Russian former junior world No. 4 Polina Kudermetova was also a winner over the weekend, claiming her fourth title on the ITF World Tennis Tour and first of the year at W15 Kazan with a 6-0 6-4 victory over compatriot Anastasia Kovaleva.

Kudermetova, the younger sister of WTA No. 32 Veronika Kudermetova, is a former girls’ singles semi-finalist at Roland Garros and quarter-finalist at the junior Australian Open and Wimbledon.
