Overview

Ane Mintegi Del Olmo became the first girl from her nation to win a Junior Grand Slam title at the 2021 Junior Championships at Wimbledon, while fellow unseeded player, American Samir Banerjee,  also achieved a surprise triumph in the boys' event.

Mintegi Del Olmo defeated Germany’s Nastasja Mariana Schunk 2-6 6-4 6-1 to become Spain’s first Junior Grand Slam champion since Alejandro Davidovich Fokina triumphed at the All England Club in 2017.

Banerjee, who entered the event ranked No. 19 in the boys’ rankings, was composed throughout - not least during his 7-5 6-3 triumph over fellow American Victor Lilov in the final.

By virtue of his win, the 17-year-old joined a prestigious list of players to have won a Junior Grand Slam while representing the United States, with Taylor Fritz, Coco Gauff, Sebastian Korda, Reilly Opelka and Tommy Paul all topping podiums in recent years.
