Zheng prepares perfectly for W100 Dubai with third title of 2021
Zheng Qinwen won a confidence-boosting third title of the year on the ITF World Tennis Tour after seeing off Martina Trevisan in the final at W25 Funchal.
The win perfectly primes the 19-year-old from China for this week’s W100 tournament in Dubai – the sixth W100 event of the year on the ITF calendar and the first since W100 Landisville in early August.
A former junior world No. 6, Zheng has enjoyed a strong transition to the professional realm over the last two years, winning seven ITF titles in total including her biggest yet at W60 Stare Splavy in Czech Republic in June.
Zheng made her WTA debut in Palermo in July, coming through qualifying to defeat Russian Liudmila Samsonova - who went on to star, and clinch the decisive match, in the Billie Jean King Cup Final earlier this month - before falling in the second round.
Zheng has since qualified for further WTA events in Moscow and Courmayeur and climbed to a career-high No. 143 in the WTA rankings last week.
Fellow Chinese player Zhuoxuan Bai has also staked her claim as one to watch in the coming months, with the 19-year-old continuing her stunning run of form on the ITF World Tennis Tour in Egypt.
The former junior world No. 9 has played six consecutive weeks of W15 tournaments in Sharm El Sheikh and come away with five singles titles, with her most recent triumph a 3-6 7-6(5) 6-0 win over Elena-Teodora Cadar on Sunday.
Bai, who is ranked outside the Top 800 and has competed in Egypt using a Junior Reserved entry spot, has compiled a 25-1 win-loss record in Egypt since 11 October, with her only loss in that time coming in early November – to home favourite Sandra Samir.
If that workload doesn’t seem impressive enough, Bai has also claimed two doubles titles and reached two further finals alongside Thai partner Punnin Kovapitukted.
She is the only woman to win an ITF title using a junior reserved entry on multiple occasions during the 2021 season.
Elsewhere last week there was W25 success for Oceane Dodin, who won her first title since October 2020 at W25 Petange, and Nefisa Berberovic, who claimed her biggest title yet – and seventh overall - at W25 Naples.
There were also wins at W15 level for Argentine Jazmin Ortenzi, Italian Melania Delai, Romanian Oana Gavrila, Hungary’s Rebekah Stolmar and Colombian Maria Fernanda Herazo Gonzalez.
As well as W100+H Dubai, there are 11 further women's tournaments taking place on the ITF World Tennis Tour this week. Follow the latest here.
