Tomic wins most significant title in five years at M25 Chennai

29 Jan 2024

Bernard Tomic picked up his biggest title in five years after winning the M25 Chennai tournament on the ITF World Tennis Tour on Sunday.

The former world No. 17 defeated India’s Sasikumar Mukund 6-4 7-6(3) for his most significant tournament win since he won the ATP 250 title in Chengdu in September 2018.

Tomic, who has been attempting to rebuild his ranking in recent years after plummeting to No. 825 in August 2022 (his lowest ranking in 14 years), has now won five ITF singles titles over the last three seasons, including four at M15 events.

A former boys’ world No. 2, Tomic won junior singles titles at both the Australian Open and US Open, and went on to reach the quarter-finals of the men’s event at Wimbledon in 2011.

The Australian appears to be using the ITF World Tennis Tour in an attempt to ignite a return to his former heights and, though he has been making steady progress in recent months, he drops 12 spots in the ATP rankings to No. 312 this week.
