Pawelski collects maiden ITF men's title in Egypt
Martyn Pawelski delivered a strong end to the season on the ITF World Tennis Tour after collecting a landmark maiden professional singles title at M15 Sharm El Sheikh.
The 18-year-old Pole has enjoyed a fine year in ITF junior competition, reaching the semi-finals of the boys’ singles at Roland Garros in June and peaking at No. 16 in the ITF junior rankings, but he took a little longer to find his groove in the men’s game this year.
Pawelski lost eight of his first nine professional matches in 2022 before turning a corner with three match-wins on the bounce at M15 Sozopol in October, ultimately falling in the semi-finals, ahead of his milestone victory in Egypt on Sunday.
As a result, Pawelski becomes the sixth Polish man to win an ITF men’s singles title this season, joining Pawel Cias, Maks Kasnikowski, Daniel Michalski, Filip Peliwo and Kacper Zuk.
Elsewhere, Dino Prizmic continued his late-season surge on the ITF World Tennis Tour with a third consecutive title at M15 Monastir, and his fourth triumph in five tournaments.
The 17-year-old Croat, who climbed as high as No. 9 in the ITF junior rankings in July, defeated USA’s Omni Kumar 6-3 7-5 in the title match for his 15th successive match-win.
There were also victories for Germany’s former junior world No. 10 Rudolf Molleker, who won his third ITF singles crown of the year at M15 Antalya, and New Zealander Ajeet Rai – who won on home soil at M15 Wellington.
