Madaras makes history as first man to win 10 ITF titles in a season
Dragos Nicolae Madaras wrote his name into the history books on Sunday – becoming the first man to win 10 singles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour in a single season.
Madaras defeated Vlad Andrei Dancu to win M25 Brasov and equal Arantxa Rus (who achieved 10 singles titles in a year in the women’s game in 2019) as the only players to take their ITF singles title tally into double figures for a season.
The 25-year-old Swede first stated his intention to break the ITF record back in February, after he opened 2023 with a 21-match winning streak and scooped four successive titles.
“My goal this year is that I want to win at least 10 ITF tournaments,” he said back then, with an eye on surpassing the nine claimed by Mohamed Safwat in 2013.
Fast-forward five months and Madaras has achieved the feat with half the season still to spare, winning 10 events on clay (seven at M15 level and three M25 events) across Turkey, Egypt, Sweden and Romania.
He has amassed a remarkable 67 match-wins on the ITF World Tennis Tour in total this year, losing just five matches – a win-rate of 93%.
Most importantly, Madaras’ triumphs have boosted his ranking from as low as 346 in January to a likely spot inside the top 200 after Wimbledon, with the lefthander currently sitting at No. 185 in the ATP live rankings.
The ITF World Tennis Tour provides a pathway to deliver players to the ATP Tours and Grand Slams, and the Swede will hope to continue his assured progress when he takes part in the Iasi Challenger in Romania this week.
