Madaras continues tilt towards ITF title record with sixth win of 2023

Dragos Nicolae Madaras appears to be on course to achieve his ambition of winning a record number of titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour this season after collecting his sixth title of the year.

The 25-year-old Swede, who leads the ITF World Tennis Tour for both matches (35) – and titles (6) – won this year after a prolific four-month spell, added the latest piece of silverware to his 2023 haul with victory at M15 Antalya.

The triumph leaves him just four titles short of matching the record-breaking run of Arantxa Rus, who became the first player to collect 10 ITF World Tennis Tour titles in a single season in 2019.

Madaras, who admitted in February he has an insatiable thirst for competition (“I want to play every week”), also proved refreshingly honest in his approach to the game, avoiding any bold declarations about what he might one day achieve in the sport.

“I’m not the kind of player that says I want to be top 100 or No. 1 in the world, you know? I just want to play tennis,” he said. “I enjoy playing tournaments every week. I just want to play, and to enjoy playing.

“Maybe I will be top 100, maybe I will be top 50, maybe I will stay at 300… I don’t know, but I want to continue to enjoy playing tennis at my full capacity. I don’t know what that is, but I’m trying to find out.”

Madaras’ latest win – his fifth of the year in Antalya – propels him nine places in the ATP rankings to a career-high No. 264.
