Jubb lands biggest title of fledgling career in Portugal
It was a weekend to remember for British tennis with teenager Emma Raducanu bursting onto the scene in some style, Joe Salisbury winning two doubles titles at the US Open and Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett clinching a calendar Grand Slam in the wheelchair men’s doubles event.
But in Portugal, 21-year-old Paul Jubb was making progress of his own as he picked up his third title on the ITF World Tennis Tour this year, but a first at the M25 level.
Jubb, who climbed 14 places as a result of his 7-5 6-4 victory over Argentina’s Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna in the M25 Sintra final, has been knocking on the door of the later rounds and has now reached the quarter-finals or better at his last five World Tennis Tour tournaments.
In M25 Eupen, Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta scored his first title of the year with a 7-6(6) 6-2 victory over Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
The 20-year-old Argentine, who is a former Youth Olympic Games silver medallist, is another player who has been going deep in recent events without getting his hands on any silverware.
There was further good news for Argentina as Santiago de la Fuente won the first title of his career at M15 Cairo when Italy’s Alessandro Ragazzi retired at 3-6 6-2 2-0 in the third set.
Bastian Malla of Chile recorded his second title of the year at M15 Ulcinj with a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win over another Argentine – Mariano Navone.
Australia’s Jeremy Beale overcame USA’s Gage Brymer 6-4 6-4 in the final at M15 Monastir for a first trophy in three years, while Brazil’s Gustavo Heide won his first career title at M15 Ibague with a 7-6(8) 7-5 triumph against Colombia’s Alejandro Gomez in the final.
