ITF Beach Tennis World Championships return to Beach Tennis birthplace

14 Mar 2023

[UPDATE]: ITF Beach Tennis World Championships 2023 - Information Circular

It is all change for the ITF Beach Tennis World Championships in 2023 with a new host city and fresh place in the calendar.

Moving from September to May (16-20), the World Championships are relocating 400km north of most-recent host city Terracina, to Cesenatico in the Emilia-Romagna region – the birthplace of the sport.

This sees the championships remain in Italy, its home since 2013, and the Federazione Italiana Tennis (FITP) are again delighted to host such a prestigious event.

“Italy once again confirms itself as the home of world beach tennis: a commitment that we wanted to keep, even in a year that is extraordinarily full of important events,” FITP President Angelo Binaghi tells itftennis.com.

“Federazione Italiana Tennis is once again investing with passion and conviction in one of its sons, also thanks to the precious support of the Emilia-Romagna Region.

“We are also happy that the ITF has chosen the beaches of Cesenatico for this World Cup, which is the cradle of this discipline".

The showpiece event was last held in the Emilia-Romagna region in 2018 when current men’s world No. 1 Antomi Ramos Viera claimed his first world title alongside Italy’s Mikael Alessi on the sands of Cervia. At the same time, women’s world No. 1 one Giulia Gasparri was winning her third title while partnering Federica Bacchetta.

Tournament Director Paolo Caponigri, who has organised numerous World Championships, is working closely with the FITP and expects another high-octane week of beach tennis.

“It is with great joy that I welcome the news that the ITF Beach Tennis World Championships will return to the land of Romagna, godmother of the sport,” Caponigri tells itftennis.com.

“In collaboration with the FITP and the Emilia-Romagna Region, we will do everything possible to welcome the hundreds of players who will arrive in Cesenatico. We will build a village with over 1,000 seats and more than 20 courts.

“We will play at night and many surprises are in the pipeline. The Municipality of Cesenatico is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the ITF Beach Tennis World Championships.”

The ITF, meanwhile, is delighted to be returning to Italy and working with such a dedicated partner as the FITP.

“The ITF Beach Tennis World Championships and Italy is an historic combination, with the country being the founders of the sport," said the ITF’s Head of Beach Tennis, Ben Philip.

"We are delighted to partner with the FITP in 2023 and excited to be returning to the Emilia-Romagna region, a hotbed of beach tennis in Italy."

Further details about the event, including details of how to attend as well as broadcasting plans, will be published on the ITF website.
