Indonesia’s top players test SANDEVER beach tennis superkits

14 Jan 2021

Four of Indonesia’s top tennis talents were among the nation’s first players to get a taste of beach tennis at the National Stadium in Jakarta, with WTA-ranked trio Aldila Sutjiadi, Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies joined by rising junior star Janice Tjen for the demonstration event.

Indonesia is one of 12 nations in Asia to receive a SANDEVER beach tennis superkit in the past six months, each of which includes a net, a set of court lines, four paddles and six balls – everything you need to start playing the sport.

To date, 41 superkits have been distributed worldwide, most recently reaching the Pacific Island of Vanuatu – all part of the ITF's Beach Tennis Global Development Programme, run in conjunction with Global Development Partner SANDEVER.

Speaking with Lani Sardadi, General Secretary of the Indonesian Tennis Association, the quartet discussed the potential for beach tennis to thrive in the island nation. While there are key differences between tennis and beach tennis, they noted the plug-and-play nature of the sport, which can be picked up very quickly, while the court equipment proved easy to set up.

The discussion also covered the prospects for the sport in a nation famed for its beach sports, with beach tourism being the nation’s largest tourism sector.

“On behalf of the Indonesian Tennis Association, we would like to thank the ITF for jump starting Beach Tennis in Indonesia,” Sardadi added.

“Being an archipelago of 13,000 islands, we are excited to start the sport here, and we are sure that having the equipment and strategic assistance from ITF will go a long way in making Beach Tennis popular and a success in Indonesia.”

The ITF Beach Tennis Tour comprises over 300 tournaments in 37 countries, with the sport's flagship competitions including the ITF Beach Tennis World Championships and the ITF Beach Tennis World Cup, as well as regional Championships in Europe, Africa and the Americas.
