Coulibaly wins back-to-back titles to make history for Cote D'Ivoire
It has been a significant fortnight for Eliakim Coulibaly.
The 20-year-old from Cote D’Ivoire has doubled his career-title haul over the past fortnight, winning back-to-back titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour to become the most successful tennis player - in terms of titles won - in his nation’s history.
In winning his third and fourth ITF singles titles at M15 Monastir Coulibaly matched, and then overtook, countryman and former world No. 339 Valentin Sanon for the most professional singles titles won by a player from Cote D’Ivoire.
And the world No. 781 did so in style on the Tunisian coast, recording 10 successive victories and winning 18 consecutive sets in the process.
Coulibaly, who was mentored by two-time Grand Slam singles champion Mary Pierce during his early transition from the junior game (in which he peaked at No. 16 in the boys' world rankings in January 2020), has amassed 27 match-wins so far this year.
That volume of success is a fine return for a talented young player who has been supported in his professional ambitions in 2022 through a $12,500 grant from the Grand Slam Player Development Programme.
Just three players from Ivory Coast have ever lifted a title on the ITF World Tennis Tour – Coulibaly (4), Sanon (3 between 2003 and 2005) and Claude N’Goran (1 in 1998) - though brothers Claude and Clement N'Goran have proved the most successful tennis players from the nation in ranking terms, reaching a high of No. 200 (in 1995) and No. 252 (in 191), respectively.
Elsewhere, Czech teen Jakub Mensik also enjoyed a milestone weekend, with the 17-year-old former junior world No. 2 collecting his first professional title on the ITF World Tennis Tour at M15 Allershausen.
The win for Mensik, who reached the boys’ singles final at the Australian Open in January but narrowly lost out to American Bruno Kuzuhara, came a week after he reached his first ATP Challenger semi-final in Prague.
