Bolsova returns to top 150 with career-best singles title at Madrid
Resurgent Aliona Bolsova powered into the world’s top 150 after topping the podium on home soil at W80 Madrid – the biggest singles title of her career to date – on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Spaniard dropped only one set on her way to the final where she dispatched Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch in commanding fashion, 6-4 6-2, to lift singles silverware for the second time this season.
Victory sees Bolsova rise to No. 140 in the WTA Rankings, her highest position since May 2021, having slipped out of the top 200 earlier this year after previously occupying the No.88 slot back in 2019.

It proved a hugely productive week for Bolsova, who also triumphed in the doubles alongside Rebeka Masarova, days after the pair had teamed up for Spain at the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals in Glasgow.
For Bolsova, it was a sixth doubles title of 2022 and her fourth on the ITF World Tennis Tour, while it is the third occasion this season that she has joined forces with Masarova to silverware-grabbing effect.
Another big winner on the ITF World Tennis Tour during the last week was 15-year-old Mirra Andreeva who collected her fourth ITF World Tennis Tour title of a staggeringly triumphant season at W60 Meitar.
Like Bolsova, this was the most significant title of Andreeva’s fledgling career and underlines her reputation as a fearsome competitor and someone to keep a close eye as she progresses along the player pathway.
Her latest success arrived following a commanding 6-1 6-4 victory over the experienced Rebecca Peterson of Sweden. Astonishingly, the impressive Andreeva lost just 15 games during the tournament as she lifted silverware in style.
Andreeva, who was a member of the victorious Russia team at the 2021 ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov, has risen to a career-high ranking of No. 300 in the world following her latest triumph.
Elsewhere, China’s Xinyu Wang sealed her second title of the season at W60 Tokyo.
Wang, who has now chalked up six ITF World Tennis Tour titles, advanced to the final relatively comfortably. Once there, for the second time that week she required three sets to prevail, this time against Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima.
The 21-year-old has now won nine of her last 10 matches and risen to No. 87 in the world rankings, having returned to the top 100 after reaching the final at W60 Nantes earlier this month.
Croatia’s Ana Konjuh was also in celebratory mood after sealing her first title of the season at W60 Bratislava where she defeated Nigina Abduraimova of Uzbekistan, 2-6 6-0 7-6(2), in the final.

The 24-year-old, who is ranked No. 117 in the world rankings, has certainly been banging on the door in recent weeks after reaching two quarter-finals and a semi-final in her previous three events leading into Bratislava.
At W25 level in the past week, there were victories for Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic, Emina Bektas of the United States, France’s Audrey Albie, Lina Gjorcheska of North Macedonia and Indonesia’s Priska Madelyn Nugroho.
