Andre makes history as Senegal's first ITF World Tennis Tour champion
Trailblazer Seydina Andre is the toast of his nation after becoming the first Senegalese player in history to win an ITF World Tennis Tour title after triumphing at M15 Monastir.
Andre was just the second Senegalese man to reach an ITF World Tennis Tour final after Yahiya Doumbia in 1998 but has forever woven his name into Senegal’s tennis fabric after holding his nerve during a tense three-setter.
The 20-year-old prevailed 3-6 6-2 7-6(6) against Slovakia’s Lukas Pokorny after dispatching another Slovak in Jakub Kroslak, Coleman Wong of Hong Kong, Australia’s Matthew Dellavedova and then Italian Luca Fantini in the semi-finals.
“First pro title – thanks everyone for the support,” wrote Andre, who is currently ranked No. 907 in the ATP Rankings, on Instagram.
