Kai Schrameyer, Severine Tamborero and Christian Gingras have been inducted into the World Tennis Wheelchair Hall of Champions, recognising their outstanding contributions to the development of wheelchair tennis in Canada and internationally.

The trio were honoured at a special ceremony during the National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Montreal on Tuesday 11 August.

Launched earlier this year as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for wheelchair tennis, the World Tennis Wheelchair Hall of Champions recognises players, coaches, organisations and other contributors whose achievements and dedication have helped shape the sport.

Kai Schrameyer

Schrameyer is inducted to the Hall of Champions as a Player and Contributor. A three-time Paralympic medallist and former World Champion representing Germany, Kai also won the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Singles Masters and led Germany to the World Team Cup men’s title during his playing career.

Following his retirement, Kai returned to wheelchair tennis in 2010 and has since been an integral part of Tennis Canada’s National High Performance Wheelchair Tennis Programme, taking on a number of roles from coaching elite players to nurturing the sport at grassroots level.

Severine Tamborero

Tamborero led Canada’s National Wheelchair Tennis Team from 2000 to 2009, a period that included three Paralympic Games and numerous World Team Cups as captain of Canada’s men’s team.

Severine was named recipient of the 2006 World Tennis Wheelchair Coach of the Year Award in recognition of her contribution to the development of wheelchair tennis in Canada and to the international wheelchair tennis community.

Christian Gingras

Gingras was named Wheelchair Tennis Coach of the Year in 2015 after serving as Canada’s head coach at the Toronto Parapan Am Games, where Joel Dembe and Philippe Bedard won bronze in men’s doubles, giving Canada its first wheelchair tennis medal at a major multi-sport Games.

Formerly Tennis Canada’s National High Performance Coach, Christian has contributed to wheelchair tennis for more than a decade, captaining Canada at multiple World Team Cups and serving as head coach at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The latest inductees are being recognised during wheelchair tennis’ 50th anniversary year, as the sport continues to grow globally and is now played in more than 100 countries.

The World Tennis Wheelchair Hall of Champions is a digital platform that recognises players who have consistently achieved at the highest level across a range of the sport's biggest events, as well as Contributors who have been recognised with the World Tennis Wheelchair Coach of the Year Award or the Brad Award.
