Reid, Kamiji complete French Riviera Open champions

28 Sep 2019

Gordon Reid and Yui Kamiji completed the singles roll of honour on Saturday’s final day of the 2019 French Riviera Open, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, as British and Japanese players contested both the men’s and women’s finals at the third edition of the ITF 2 event at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Biot.

Top seed and world No. 8 Reid made it back-to-back men’s singles titles in Biot and took his personal tournament record to 10 wins from 11 matches as he beat second seed Takuya Miki 6-1 6-3.

After making it to all three French Riviera Open men’s finals contested so far, Reid’s only loss has come to Frenchman Nicolas Peifer in the 2017 final – a loss Reid avenged in the 2018 final.

Kamiji completed the tournament as women’s singles and doubles champion after the world No. 2 made it three wins from three matches this season against her doubles partner Jordanne Whiley.

Having beaten Whiley in the Wimbledon quarter-finals and the US Open USTA Wheelchair Championships semifinals, Kamiji secured her seventh title from 12 finals this season with a 6-1 6-2 victory as last week’s Open de L’Ile de Re champion made it back-to-back titles in France.

Reid and Kamiji’s victories mean that the French Riviera Open roll of honour for 2019 features players from three different countries. Dutch 16-year-old Niels Vink claimed the quad singles title on the penultimate day of competition after the world No. 6 beat Korean Kyu-Seung Kim 7-5 6-0.
