Olympics has the power to unite, says Rublev
The International Olympic Committee has been working on a campaign called #StrongerTogether ever since the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games had to be postponed.
And it seems they have an advocate in the shape of world No. 7 Andrey Rublev, who spoke of the unifying power of sport when asked about competing at the Olympic Games at the 2019 Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals.
“For two or three weeks all the world will be on the TV watching all the sports,” said Rublev. “It’s amazing. This makes all the world a little bit more together.”
Ranked inside the Top 10, Rublev is one of the medal contenders in Tokyo and will be hoping to use the experience of competing at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing to his advantage.
“It was amazing,” Rublev recalled of his time at the Youth Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in singles. “It was a really, really special feeling to stay in the Village with all the sportsmen.
“You feel like it’s [the] real Olympic Games because all the sportsmen sleep in one Village. You get to know other people, other sports, you stay with them, you live with them, you have to share the rooms with them. It’s an experience that you don’t really have anywhere.”
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Tennis Event will start on Saturday 24 July, with the medal matches scheduled for 30 July-1 August.
