Who is Renata Jamrichova? Five facts about Slovakia's rising star
12 Oct 2022
Slovakia’s Renata Jamrichova hit the headlines earlier this week when she was included within her nation’s squad for November’s 2022 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals in Glasgow.
The 15-year-old will join the likes of Viktoria Kuzmova and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova as Slovakia go in search of a second Billie Jean King Cup title – and first since 2002. But who is Renata Jamrichova and what has been her journey to this point?
Here are five things to know about Slovakia’s Billie Jean King Cup rookie and her pathway to the women’s world cup of tennis Finals.
- Should Jamrichova take to the court and compete at November’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals, she will become the youngest Slovakian to feature in the competition. The current record is held by Dominika Cibulkova, who was aged 16 years and 65 days when she made her Billie Jean King Cup debut against Thailand in 2005.
- The teenager has had limited exposure to the professional ranks although she did make her ITF World Tennis Tour debut last week, recording her maiden main draw match-wins after navigating qualifying and reaching the quarter-finals at W60 Trnava. She lost to world No. 80 Xinyu Wang in the last eight.
- Jamrichova has two ITF World Tennis Tour junior singles titles on her career CV after triumphing at J4 Luzern and J5 Bratislava in 2021. While she is without singles silverware this season, she has claimed two doubles titles and also made her Junior Grand Slam debut at the Junior Championships, Wimbledon in July.
- The 15-year-old has prior experience of playing in a team environment having represented Slovakia at the 2021 ITF World Junior Tennis Finals – the ITF’s premier 14-and-under team competition. Her career trajectory showcases the ITF player pathway and its importance, while she knows what it means to win matches on behalf of her nation.
- Junior World No. 75 Jamrichova clearly thrives while wearing national team colours. Earlier this year, she won gold in the girls’ singles and mixed doubles tennis competitions at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Banska Bystrica.
