It has been a long wait, but the moment has finally arrived. On Sunday, the first ITF World Championships in Seniors tennis since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic will get underway in Umag, Croatia.

While the Young Seniors and Super Seniors editions, which are set to take place in Umag and Mallorca respectively, will follow later in the year, first up is the ITF Seniors (50-55-60) World Team and Individual Championships.

It will be the 40th incarnation of the ITF Seniors World Team and Individual Championships and the postponement of the 2020 event will no doubt have sharpened the focus of all competitors as silverware and prestige beckons.

The ITF Seniors World Team Championship, which takes place from 29 August – 3 September, will see more than 400 players represent their nations. In total, there are 103 teams from 27 countries in the mix for honours.

As the international competition unfolds on the Istrian peninsula, the United States will bid to defend the titles they won in Portugal back in 2019 in the Maria Esther Bueno, Von Cramm and Alice Marble Cups.

France, Germany and Spain, meanwhile, will also bid to repeat their successes of two years ago in the Austria Cup, Maureen Connolly Cup and Fred Perry Cup respectively.

In the individual event two years ago, players from 11 different nations recorded singles, doubles or mixed doubles glory and the battle for on-court kudos this time around is likely to be equally as competitive. The ITF Seniors World Individual Championship follows the team extravaganza and runs from 4-11 September.
