Uchiyama claims first ITF World Tennis Tour title in seven years
Japan’s Davis Cup stalwart Yasutaka Uchiyama claimed his first ITF World Tennis Tour title for seven years – since June 2015 – after topping the podium at M25 Monastir.
World No. 294 Uchiyama, who has contested 16 Davis Cup ties since making his competition debut in 2013, defeated Australia’s Akira Santillan 7-6(3) 6-7(5) 6-3 to lift silverware on Tunisia’s central coast.
The 29-year-old was a commanding presence throughout and proceeded to the final without dropping a set, dispatching three other Australians – Tai Sach, Dusan Rsovac and Dane Sweeny – before overcoming China’s Fajing Sun in the semi-finals.
Since his last ITF World Tennis Tour triumph, Uchiyama has sealed five titles at ATP Challenger level, although he has now played three successive ITF World Tennis Tour events and is this week once again competing in Monastir.
Elsewhere at M25 level, Czech Republic’s Andrew Paulson, Samuel Vincent Ruggeri of Italy and Ukrainian Vladyslav Orlov all won the biggest titles of their careers at M25 Most, M25 Ulcinj and M25 Osijek respectively.
While he has conquered all before him at an M25 event previously – at M25 Idanha-a-Nova in July 2021 – there was a first triumph of the season for Spain’s Alejandro Moro Canas at M25 Vic.
