Uchijima's sizzling spell continues with third W100 crown in six weeks
Moyuka Uchijima continued her remarkable run of form on the ITF World Tennis Tour, claiming her third consecutive title - and third at the Tour’s highest-level in six weeks – at W100 Madrid on Sunday.
Uchijima overcame Spaniard Leyra Romero Gormaz 5-7 6-4 7-5 in the final to win her fifth ITF singles crown of the year and her 13th overall.
“I am very happy for the victory,” said the 22-year-old from Japan. “It is my third consecutive title and it is the first time I achieved [three in a row], so I'm very happy.
“I have been able to overcome very tough games this week and today I was able to focus on myself, fight and I am very happy to have won.”
Uchijima, who began the year outside the world’s top 170, rocketed 30 spots to a career-high No. 80 after negotiating Romero Gormaz for her 15th consecutive match-win.
In breaking into the top 100 for a first time she also becomes the new Japanese No.1, leapfrogging No. 96 Nao Hibino and comfortably ahead of the likes of Mai Hontama, Naomi Osaka and rising junior Sara Saito.
Uchijima could also be in line for a place at the Olympic Tennis event if she can continue to drive her ranking forward at its current rate of progress ahead of the direct acceptance cut off for Paris 2024 on 10 June.
Romero Gomez, meanwhile, acknowledged the challenge of facing a player in such a rich vein of form.
“She has been playing at a great level, she is confident, in important moments she raises the level and has been very [balanced],” said the 22-year-old lefthander, who could be delighted with reaching her first ITF W100 final.
“Without a doubt this week is a boost of confidence, knowing that you can compete against such good tennis players who are in the top 100 or close,” she added. “I leave here with a lot of confidence and eager to continue getting better.”
There were also notable wins on the ITF World Tennis Tour this week for 21-year-old Croatian Tara Wurth, who won her first title of the year on home soil at W75 Zagreb, and Emina Bektas, who won at W75 Kurume a week after finishing runner-up at W75 Fukuoka.
