Third time lucky for Baez in Tunisia
For the third week in succession, 18-year-old Sebastian Baez was competing in a M15 Tabarka tournament in Tunisia and having previously made two exits at the hand of Genaro Alberto Olivieri, Baez finally turned the tables on his fellow Argentine in a quarter-final clash en route to winning his second ITF World Tennis Tour title of 2019 in Week 25.
Following a less than ideal start to the week when losing his opening set of the tournament 6-0, the junior reserved place entrant then reeled off ten sets in a row, sealing the title with a 6-2 6-4 defeat of Italian Alexander Weis on Sunday.
As players continue to fine tune their game ahead of Wimbledon, Monica Niculescu, doubles runner-up at the All England Club in 2017, won her first singles title since November 2017 at the W100 Ilkley tournament winning four of her five matches in three sets including the final where she overcame 2019 Roland Garros doubles champion Timea Babos 6-2 4-6 6-3.
Another big winner in the women’s game was former doubles world No. 1 Barbora Krejcikova, who took the W60 Stare Splavy singles title in her home nation.
Her fourth singles title triumph of 2019 sees the 23-year-old 2018 Roland Garros and Wimbledon doubles champion climb to a career best WTA singles ranking of 118.
In Florida, the Zamarippa twins continued their good form in the American state by adding the W15 Orlando title to the W15 Wesley Chapel title won the week before. Allura and Maribella came through the week in Orlando without losing a set and wrapped up another successful week in an all-American final with a 6-3 6-1 win over Kimmi Hance and Ashlyn Krueger.
Two players making good use of their ITF ranking to gain entry into main draws were Tsung-Hao Huang and Arianne Hartono at the M25 Hengyang and W25 Jakarta tournaments respectively.
Benefitting from a walkover in the quarter-final, Huang’s first singles semi-final appearance ended in a straight sets loss but he was able to quickly put the defeat behind him when returning to the court for the doubles final which saw him, alongside Wei-De Lin, pick-up a career first ITF pro title.
Hartono replicated her showing at the W15 Monastir tournament earlier this year when reaching the singles final but the Dutchwoman found Risa Ozaki too strong in the final, with the Japanese player a 6-4 6-1 winner.
Last week also saw four players collect both singles and doubles titles. Anastasia Zakharova won both at the W15 Netanya tournament, the second time she has managed this feat in 2019 and earning herself a jump in the WTA singles rankings to a new career high of 586 whilst Benjamin Bonzi, Maxime Cressy and Eduardo Struvay made a clean sweep of the titles at the M25 Toulouse, M25 Tulsa and M25 Martos tournaments.
