Sara Sorribes Tormo enjoyed the perfect preparation for Roland Garros after winning the biggest title of her career – and just her second above W25 level – at the W80 Cagnes-sur-Mer tournament on the ITF World Tennis Tour in France.

The 23-year-old Spaniard defeated Romanian Irina Maria Bara 6-3 6-4 in the final to cap off a fine week on French soil in which she overcame Whitney Osuigwe, Varvara Lepchenko, Viktorija Golubic and Viktoriya Tomova without dropping a set.

Sorribes Tormo’s successful week marks just the second time she has recorded back-to-back match-wins in her five tournament appearances since tennis re-started in August following lockdown.

Her triumph edges her closer to her career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 64 going into the third Grand Slam of the 2020 season in Paris, where she will aim to improve on her best Grand Slam result. Sorribes Tormo reached the second round at Roland Garros last year, as well as at Wimbledon in 2018, and the Australian and US Opens this year.

Britain’s Samantha Murray Sharan and Germany’s Julia Wachaczyk joined Sorribes Tormo in the winners’ circle in Cagnes-sur-Mer after winning their first title together in the doubles tournament.

The pair won 7-5 6-2 to deny Polish duo Paula Kania and Katarzyna Piter, winners at W60+H Saint-Malo the previous week, a second consecutive title on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

The triumph marked a 30th professional doubles title for 26-year-old Wachaczyk and a 22nd career doubles title - and the biggest of her career - for 32-year-old Murray Sharan.
