Shymanovich marks comeback with first title in two and a half years
Former junior world No. 2 Iryna Shymanovich collected her first title in over two and a half years on the ITF World Tennis Tour after winning at W15 Sharm El Sheikh on Sunday.
In her first competitive singles appearance in 12 months, the 23-year-old Belarusian won her 10th ITF singles title overall - and her third in Sharm El Sheikh - courtesy of a 6-3 7-5 triumph over American Jessie Aney.
Her five match-wins at the Egyptian tournament were her first professional singles wins since she reached the second round at W60 Warsaw in August 2019.
Shymanovich enjoyed a fruitful junior career with some glittering results but, hampered by injury problems, hasn’t yet managed to translate that form to the professional stage.
She won the silver medal at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games and reached the quarter-finals in both the girls’ singles and doubles events at Roland Garros and the US Open, as well as finishing runner-up in the girls’ doubles at 2013 Wimbledon.
Despite her junior form, the Belarusian - who hasn’t played more than 10 tournaments in one season since 2013 - has yet to surpass the career-high senior ranking of No. 367 she achieved in September 2014, and currently sits at No. 441 in the world.
Meanwhile, world No. 490 Gergana Topolova also ended a two-and-a-half-year title drought with victory at W15 Heraklion. The 20-year-old Bulgarian collected her third professional singles title – and first since May 2018 – after beating Germany’s Romy Koelzer in the final of the Greek tournament.
Elsewhere, world No. 251 Lara Salden won her fifth professional singles title – and first since December 2018 – after triumphing at W15 Lousada in Portugal.
The 21-year-old Belgian, whose previous four title triumphs came at W15 level during the 2018 season, cruised through the tournament without dropping a set, culminating in a 6-4 6-3 triumph over Switzerland’s Susan Bandecchi.
Mayar Sherif won the marquee tournament of the week - becoming the first Egyptian to win one of the highest prize-money tournaments available on the ITF World Tennis Tour with victory at W100 Charleston. Read about Sherif's triumph here.
