Seventeen-year-old Zheng wins first pro title in Cordenons
Zheng Qinwen made it back-to-back success for 17-year-olds on the resumption of the ITF World Tennis Tour by following Clara Tauson’s lead last week to claim her first professional title - in her first final - at W15 Cordenons.
Where Tauson is already proving prolific in ITF tournaments after adding a seventh title to her burgeoning collection at W15 Oeiras in late August, Zheng made the first major move in her transition to the professional game this weekend with victory at the Italian clay court tournament.
The former junior world No. 6 collected five wins – dishing out four bagels in the process – in a breakthrough week in North-East Italy that culminated in an emphatic 6-1 6-0 win over Austria’s Mira Antonitsch, 21.
Zheng, whose previous best result on the ITF World Tennis Tour came in reaching the semi-finals at W15 Madrid last June, climbed to a career-high No. 617 in the WTA rankings by virtue of her triumph.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Cindy Burger was crowned champion in the other women’s tournament taking place on the ITF World Tennis Tour last week at W15 Alkmaar.
The former world No. 134 overcame another promising teenager – 18-year-old Kamilla Bartone – in the first round en route to collecting her seventh ITF title and second on home soil.
Italian Angelica Moratelli and Slovenia’s Nika Radisic collected the women’s doubles title in Cordenons, while Dutch-French pair Suzan Lamens and Marine Partaud won the doubles in Alkmaar.
