Oliveira eyes next step after fourth ITF crown in three months
Former world No. 194 Goncalo Oliveira stepped up his bid to return to ATP Challenger level after capturing his fourth title in three months on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
After an injury-affected 2022 season, the 28-year-old from Portugal began 2023 at No. 507 in the world - his lowest ranking in over six years - but has bounced back at ITF level in recent months.
Oliveira’s latest triumph – at M25 Rome following a 6-2 6-1 victory over Italian Luca Potenza in the title match – adds to his titles at M25 Loule, M25 Portimao and M25 Santa Margherita di Pula since early March.
“It’s been a really good last few weeks,” admitted Oliveira, who has now won 11 singles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour, including eight on clay. “I’m really happy with how the year has gone, and hopefully it continues like this for the rest of the season.”
Oliveira, whose last appearance on the ATP Challenger Tour came in a second-round defeat as a wild card at Oeiras in January, is projected to rise to No. 284 in the ATP rankings after Roland Garros.
“I’m very close to coming back to [Challenger level],” he said. “With this result I will be [around] 280 in the world so I’ll start to get in main draws again hopefully, and be back where I feel I belong which is the Challenger Tour.
“I want to try to make the US Open Qualies,” he added, of his goals for the remainder of the year. “If I can make that, that would be the goal of the season. It’s the last Grand Slam of the year, that’s everybody’s wish – to play those tournaments – and that’s my wish as well.”
