Parrizas-Diaz's resurgence continues as Spaniard conquers Landisville
It is proving a remarkable season for Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, who continued her stunning form by claiming the biggest ITF World Tennis Tour title of her career with victory at W100 Landisville.
The 30-year-old’s latest silverware charge was her fifth on the ITF World Tennis Tour in 2021, while last month she also scooped the most illustrious triumph of her career at the Nordea Open.
On this occasion, on the hard courts of Pennsylvania, Parrizas-Dias topped the podium after defeating Belgium’s Greet Minnen in a final showdown which went the distance. She eventually prevailed 7-6(6) 4-6 7-6(7).
It was a recurring theme for Parrizas-Diaz, who on two other occasions – against Grace Min of the United States and then Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa in the semi-finals – navigated a third set in order to progress.
She also navigated a clash with Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu, who reached the fourth round at the Wimbledon Championships last month. With Parrizas-Diaz leading 4-3 in the first set, Raducanu was forced to retire through injury.
Her staggering upturn in form is a complete contrast to the state of her career five years ago, when she was advised by medical professionals to hang up her racket for good after suffering a serious shoulder injury.
Parrizas-Diaz, who reached a career-high No. 108 in the world rankings last month, now has 22 ITF World Tennis Tour titles to her name, having won her first in Istanbul back in 2013, with 18 of those coming on hard courts.
Elsewhere on the ITF World Tennis Tour, Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands, somewhat remarkably in relation to trophy hauls of years gone by, claimed her maiden title of the campaign with victory at W60 San Bartolome de Tirajana.
Indeed, success in Gran Canaria provided world No. 80 Rus with her first title since topping the podium at W25 Orlando in November 2019, which was her 10th piece of silverware of what proved an exceptional season.
In addition, by defeating Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in the final, Rus ended a run of four successive defeats in finals, three of which have occurred this season since May.
It was also a victory secured in style. In beating Ashley Lahey of the United States, Spain’s Guiomar Maristany Zuleta de Reales, France’s Diane Parry, Russian Elina Avanesyan and Sherif, Rus failed to drop a set during the entire tournament.
There were also victories for Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini and Mirjam Bjorklund of Sweden at W25 Salinas and W25 Koksijde respectively. In both cases, it was a maiden ITF World Tennis Tour title since 2019.
Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja and Ayumi Koshiishi of Japan, meanwhile, were victorious at $15k level. Left-hander Semenistaja clinched her third professional crown at W15 Bratislava, while Koshiishi made it two wins from her previous three events at W15 Monastir.
The ITF World Tennis Tour Women’s continues with seven tournaments this week, headlined by W60 San Bartolome de Tirajana, while there are W25 events at Vrnjacka Banja, Oldenzaal and Ourense. Follow live results here.
