Parrizas-Diaz triumphs at Ilana Kloss International
Nuria Parrizas-Diaz claimed the 18th ITF World Tennis Tour title of her career to close in on the WTA top 200 with victory at the Ilana Kloss International, while Linda Fruhvirtova’s spellbinding start to 2021 continued with another sweep of the titles at W15 Monastir.
Spanish 29-year-old Parrizas-Diaz, who reached her career-high ranking of No. 196 a year ago, won the W25 Potchefstroom event with a 6-1 4-6 6-2 victory over Hungary’s Anna Bondar in the final, her third trophy at W25 level and 15th hard court triumph.
Bondar beat top seed Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove to reach the final but came up short in both title matches, also losing the doubles final alongside compatriot Reka-Luca Jani to Dutch duo Kerkhove and Bibiane Schoofs.
Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic won the week’s other W25 event, clinching her 10th ITF title in Grenoble. The former world No. 51, who also has WTA titles at Gstaad and 125K Indian Wells on her resume, defeated Belgian qualifier Maryna Zanevska 6-1 4-6 7-6(2).
For the second week in succession, 15-year-old Fruhvirtova claimed both the singles and doubles titles at W15 Monastir, defeating Algeria’s Ines Ibbou in the singles final 6-2 6-2.
Fruhvirtova now has a 13-1 singles record on the ITF World Tennis Tour in 2021, having reached the finals of all three events she has entered, while 22-year-old Ibbou’s wait for a first title since 2017 goes on. The Czech teenager also claimed a second straight doubles title with Weronika Falkowska.
In Turkey, Russia’s Polina Kudermetova – the younger sister of world No. 36 Veronika – won the second ITF World Tennis Tour title of her career and first on clay at W15 Antalya.
Kudermetova, a Junior Reserved entrant, defeated Spanish 19-year-old qualifier Marta Custic 6-2 1-6 6-3. The 17-year-old won her maiden title in Antalya two years earlier, when the event was played on hard courts, and reached the final again in December 2020, only for rain to force the cancellation of the title match against Romania’s Andreea Amalia Rosca.
There was a reversal of fortunes at W15 Shymkent, where Russia’s Anastasia Tikhonova turned the tables on last week’s champion Yuliya Hatouka of Belarus, winning the repeat of the previous final 7-5 2-6 7-6(2) for the first ITF World Tennis Tour title of the 20-year-old’s career.
Brazil’s Laura Pigossi collected her first ITF World Tennis Tour title in five years – and first outside South America – with victory at W15 Villena in Spain. The 26-year-old defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Yashina 3-6 6-0 6-4 to claim her fifth ITF title, and second on hard courts.
At Sharm El Sheikh, Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti clinched her third title, and first since 2017, with a 7-6(4) 6-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Nefisa Berberovic.
The ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour continues this week with action in six tournaments, including W25 Orlando, FL. Follow the live scores.
