Olympics set for Paris in 2024, Los Angeles in 2028

01 Aug 2017

Los Angeles has declared its candidature to host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games after reaching a deal with the International Olympic Committee, paving the way for the 2024 Games to be held in Paris.

The Los Angeles Organising Committee has signed a contract with the IOC that will see it given up to $1.8bn in contributions as compensation for withdrawing its bid to host the 2024 Games, and to help it increase participation and access to youth sports programmes in the years leading up to 2028.

Paris and Los Angeles had both wanted to host the 2024 Games, but were advised to devise a plan to share the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. IOC President Thomas Bach said he welcomed LA's decision.

"The IOC welcomes this decision of the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Candidature Committee. and we are pleased to release the Host City contract 2028 in a transparent and timely manner," said Bach.

"Los Angeles presented an excellent candidature that embraces the Olympic Agenda 2020 sustainability priorities by maximising the use of existing facilities and encouraging the engagement of more youth in the Olympic Movement.

"Therefore, we are very happy that, as part of this Host City Contract, we are able to increase the access of the city's youth to sport, and encourage the healthy lifestyle of Angelenos for the next 11 years.

"We are very confident that we can reach a tripartite agreement under the leadership of the IOC with LA and Paris in August, creating a win-win-win situation for all three partners. This agreement will be put forward to the IOC Session in Lima in September for ratification."

Both LA and Paris are set to host the Olympic Games for a third time, with LA hosting in 1932 and 1984, and Paris hosting in 1900 and 1924. The 2024 edition is set to mark 100 years since Paris last hosted the Games.
