Jamrichova claims second Junior Grand Slam singles title of 2024
Renata Jamrichova is just the second player in the last decade to win multiple Grand Slam girls’ singles titles after defeating Australia’s Emerson Jones in the Wimbledon final.
Jamrichova prevailed 6-3 6-4 to claim her second Junior Grand Slam singles title of the season after also defeating Jones in the Australian Open final in January.
She follows in the footsteps of Alina Korneeva, who won the girls' singles titles at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros last year, while the 17-year-old has also become the first Slovak to seal a Wimbledon junior singles title.
It really has been a remarkable season so far for Jamrichova and she will retain her spot at the summit of the ITF World Tennis Tour girls’ rankings following her latest triumph.
Also in 2024, she has claimed two professional titles at ITF World Tennis Tour level, starred for Slovakia in Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge and won the girls’ doubles title at last month’s Roland Garros Junior Championships.
In contrast to her semi-final when she failed to realise she had won at the moment of victory, Jamrichova was fully aware of her triumph and the scale of her achievement was not lost on the Trnava-born left-hander.
“I am feeling just amazing right now,” said Jamrichova. “I’m so happy and grateful that I could finish my junior career with this title. I played on such a nice court – Court No. 1 – which had a nice atmosphere and so many people watched me play.
“This was, for sure, the best junior match I ever played – I’m just so happy. I actually played with great freedom today. I played for no points, no win. I just played here and enjoyed my last days with my friends and the other junior players here.
“I think this final was just another level of game from my side and also Emerson's. She has improved so much from the Australian Open. It was a better level of tennis today than we showed in Australia. It was such a nice match.”
Jamrichova had Facetimed her family – apparently her mum gets very nervous watching her matches – following her victory before attending post-match press with her coach Jan Matus.
Matus has coached Jamrichova from an early age, and the teenager was keen to heap praise on the man who has played such a huge part in her progression and development.
“He has been such an important person for me on court but also off the court,” added Jamrichova. “He taught me to express my emotions and to say no to things when I don’t like them.
“He has done many things for me. It is so nice for us to share moments like this. He has been with me at every tournament since I was young. He has seen me at my lowest points and also now when I’m playing my best tennis."
