Shockwaves were sent through the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Finals after Argentina overcame Czech Republic to send the top seeds tumbling out of the tournament following a pulsating quarter-final showdown on Centre Court.

Juan Estevez started the ball rolling in the opening singles match, defeating Jan Hrazdil 6-0 4-6 6-2, before Gonzalo Zeitune settled matters by dispatching Vojtech Petr, 3-6 7-6(5) 6-3, in a stunning comeback victory.

Argentina have never been crowned Junior Davis Cup champions but have finished third in three out of the last four editions of the competition and have designs on making history in Antalya.

Russia are their semi-final opponents and the confidence gained from defeating the most-fancied team in the tournament will serve as nothing but a positive as the unseeded South Americans go in search of that elusive title.

“It feels fantastic,” Zeitune told itftennis.com. “We did a great job today and we deserved this win. We are really happy to be within the top four teams in the world, and even more happy at representing Argentina.

“I have lost to Czech Republic before at the Junior Davis Cup Finals, so I am especially happy for this victory and I am very excited to be in the semi-finals. We cannot wait to play the semis and we will be sure to give 100 per cent for the win.

“We are a humble group and we will always give everything inside of us. We will have dinner together in the hotel tonight – which will be happier than yesterday after our loss to Germany – and we need to get ready for the next round so we’re ready to win.”

Russia, meanwhile, advanced to the semi-finals at the expense of Canada as Yaroslav Demin and Maxim Zhukov demonstrated their singles prowess by defeating Liam Drover-Mattinen and Stefan Simeunovic respectively.

The Russians have been in blistering form since losing their opening match against Mexico and will be eyeing a first Junior Davis Cup title since 2016 when their nation defeated defending champions Canada, who had Felix Auger-Aliassime within their ranks.

Tomorrow’s other semi-final will see No. 2 seeds France take on Mexico. The in-form French, who were last crowned Junior Davis Cup champions in 2005, are the only remaining side in the tournament to boast a 100 per cent record after thrashing Japan 3-0.

Arthur Gea and Gabriel Debru did the damage in the singles, posting convincing victories over Naoya Honda and Hayato Matsuoka respectively, before Debru and Antoine Ghibaudo triumphed in the doubles.

No. 3 seeds Mexico, meanwhile, came from behind to defeat Germany, who are captained by two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Philipp Petzschner. In the end, the doubles proved decisive as Luca Lemaitre and Rodrigo Pacheco held their nerve.

Lemaitre and Pacheco defeated Georg Eduard Israelan and Yannick Kelm 6-3 6-3. Earlier, Pacheco had hauled Mexico level by defeating David Fix after Kelm gave Germany an early lead with victory over Lemaitre.

By reaching the semi-finals, Mexico are guaranteed at least a top-four finish for the first time in their history. Never before have Mexico finished so high in either Junior Davis Cup or Junior Billie Jean King Cup.

In the positional play-offs, there were wins for Korea, Republic, Bulgaria, Brazil and Turkey against Chile, Hong Kong, Tunisia and Egypt respectively.
