Claire Liu made it a fortnight to remember on the ITF World Tennis Tour after claiming her second straight title – and biggest career triumph yet – at W100 Charleston.

A week after securing her first title above $25k-level at W60 Charlottesville, the 20-year-old American went one step further in South Carolina, defeating compatriot Madison Brengle 6-2 7-6(6) for her sixth ITF singles crown.

“Two weeks and two titles… coming for ya Europe,” Liu posted on Instagram after her victory – a statement of intent as she looks to take her fine clay court form into the second Grand Slam of the year at Roland Garros.

Liu has a 12-1 record on clay in 2021, with her only loss coming against Shelby Rogers in the second round at the WTA International event in Charleston in early April.

The former junior world No. 1 is adept on all surfaces, notably winning the girls' singles title at Wimbledon in 2017, but she continues to impress on clay – with her fifth career clay court singles title propelling her 43 places in the WTA rankings to a career-high No. 129 this week.

Three other female title winners on the ITF World Tennis Tour also achieved new career-high rankings this week, with Germany’s Jule Niemeier climbing to No. 246 after winning at W25 Prague; Swiss Valentina Ryser climbing to No. 645 after triumphing at W15 Ramat Hasharon and Hungary’s Panna Udvardy up to No. 323 after taking the title at W25 Naples.

Other winners last week included former world No. 184 Polina Leykina, who collected her 10th ITF singles title - and first since 2017 - at W15 Antalya; Bulgarian Gergana Topalova, who won a fourth ITF singles crown at W15 Cairo; and Italian Angelica Raggi, who won her second professional singles crown in Monastir, two-and-a-half-years after winning her first at the same venue.

In the final event of the week, Mai Hontama ended a run of four defeats in professional singles finals to secure her first title on Ecuadorian soil at W25 Salinas. The 21-year-old Japanese player had finished runner-up in her last two tournaments in Antalya but held strong to overcome Canadian Carol Zhao 7-5 6-1 and finally join the winner’s circle.

The ITF World Tennis Tour sees a further seven women's tournaments this week, headlined by W100 Bonita Springs on US soil, and two W60 tournaments in La Bisbal D’Emporda, Spain and W60 Saint-Gaudens, France.
