Furness extends winning streak to 18 matches in Greece
Evan Furness continued his dominance of the M15 Heraklion series on the ITF World Tennis Tour – winning his third title in as many weeks at the Greek tournament on Sunday.
In a repeat of the previous week’s final, the 22-year-old Frenchman extended his winning streak to 18 matches after defeating Lucas Catarina 6-3 4-6 6-1 in the title match.
Furness had beaten Catarina en route to the title in each of the last three weeks, having also defeated the Monaco native in the second round on the way to the first of his three wins at the event in October.
In the past three weeks, Furness has doubled his career title haul to six, adding to his first three tournament wins in Faro in 2018, and at M25 events in Hong Kong and Oberentfelden in 2019. He is joint-third on the list for the most match-wins on the ITF World Tennis Tour this season with 30 victories, behind only Catarina (34) and Italian Alessandro Bega (31).
The Heraklion tournament was affected by torrential rainfall and heavy flooding that caused considerable damage across Crete and saw the doubles event carried over to this week – with Jakub Paul and Mick Veldheer ultimately winning both their semi-final and final in the same day on Monday.
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune continued his impressive transition to the men’s tour after winning his second career title at M15 Valldoreix.
The former junior world No. 1 defeated Spaniard Javier Barranco Cosano 7-6(0) 6-3 in the singles final – and only narrowly missed out on a second career doubles title after he and partner Eric Vanshelboim fell to Abedallah Shelbayh and Pedro Vives Marcos.
Elsewhere, Petros Chrysochos won his eighth professional singles title - and second of the year - on the ITF World Tennis Tour after defeating Vladyslav Orlov to with the title at M15 Sharm El Sheikh.
The 24-year-old Cypriot, playing in just his third tournament since the resumption of professional tennis in August, improved upon a runner-up finish at the same venue the previous week, when he fell to Bega.
Chrysochos also won the title at M25 Las Vegas in March, just before the five-month suspension of professional tennis.
