Furness downs Rune in Manacor to collect seventh ITF title
Evan Furness continued his title-winning form on the ITF World Tennis Tour, claiming his seventh career title – and fourth in three months – at M15 Manacor.
The 22-year-old Frenchman had finished runner-up at an M15 final at the Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy the previous week but made no mistake with his second opportunity at the same venue, defeating Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune 6-2 5-7 6-0 in the final.
Rune, the former junior world No. 1 and 2019 Roland Garros boys' champion, had been gunning for his fourth ITF title after wins at M25 Klosters, M15 Valldoreix and M15 Antalya over the last five months.
He negotiated three French players on his way to the title match, but despite wins over Clement Tabur, former world No. 62 Kenny De Schepper and Dan Added, he was unable to overcome a fourth.
Adrian Andreev, another promising former junior having reached No. 2 in the world in the boys’ singles rankings, was amongst the title winners on the weekend.
The 19-year-old Bulgarian defeated Russian Alexander Shvechenko 6-1 7-6(1) to win his second ITF crown – adding to his triumph at M15 Heraklion in November.
Carlos Sanchez, meanwhile, won his first professional singles title at M15 Cairo. The 20-year-old Spaniard overcame Argentine Juan Pablo Pablo Paz to claim victory – a month after finishing runner-up in his first ITF final at the same venue.
