Finalists decided at 20th Sardinia Open

04 Oct 2019

With Sam Schroder and Niels Vink already through to an all-Dutch quad singles final at the Sardinia Open, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer set up an all-French men’s singles final on Friday’s penultimate day of play and top seeds Yui Kamiji and Aniek van Koot reached the women’s final.

With three 6-0 6-0 wins to his name this week in Alghero, top seed Houdet had to work much harder against fourth seed Gordon Reid before keeping himself on track for what would be a fifth men’s singles title.

Houdet won through 3-6 6-3 6-4 for his third win in four three-set matches against Reid this season and will now play world No. 7 Peifer for the sixth time this season after five previous quarterfinals.

Two of Peifer’s three previous career matches against Takuya Miki had had gone to three sets, too, before their semifinal in Alghero. With Miki having beaten second seed Alfie Hewett for the first time in Thursday’s quarterfinals, Japan’s former world No. 6 took the first set off Peifer for their second match in a row. Also for the second match in a row Peifer snatched the second set in a tiebreak ad ultimately escaped with a narrow 4-6 7-6(7) 6-4 victory to make it four wins in four matches against Miki.

Houdet and Peifer will go head-to-head for the Sardinia Open title for the second time in three years.

By comparison the women’s singles semifinals proved to be straight forward tests for world No. 2 Kamiji and world No. 3 van Koot.

Kamiji secured her fourth straight sets win of 2019 against wold No. 5 Whiley 6-1 6-0, Whiley narrowly failing to get a game on the board as the second set concluded.

Van Koot extended her current winning streak against world No. 9 Sabine Ellerbrock to four matches since the met in the 2017 Roland Garros semifinals as the second seed booked her place in the title decider 6-2 6-1.

Saturday’s contest will be Kamiji and van Koot’s second Sardinia Open final, Kamiji having won the 2015 decider in three sets.

Schroder and Vink win quad doubles title

Ahead of going head-to-head on Saturday for the quad singles title, Schroder and Vink claimed their second quad doubles title together after racing to a 6-1 6-0 victory over Germany’s Maximilian Laudan and Britain’s James Shaw 6-1 6-0.

There’s the opportunity for another all-Dutch success on Saturday when top seeds Michaela Spaanstra and van Koot line-up in the women’s doubles final. Spaanstra and van Koot gained

Top seeds Spaanstra and van Koot edged past Japanese third seeds Kanako Domori and Kamiji 7-5 7-6(1) in the last four.

Meanwhile, fourth seeds Charlotte Famin and Hui Min Huang were awarded a walkover ahead of their semifinal against Katharina Kruger and Whiley after Whiley was forced to withdraw.

The men’s doubles final will be contested by very familiar opponents as top seeds Houdet and Peifer second second seeds Hewett and Reid.
