Elias ends three-year title drought with victory at M25 Porto
Former world No. 57 Gastao Elias collected his first piece of silverware in three years after defeating compatriot Nuno Borges to win the title at M25 Porto.
Elias, who has struggled with shoulder injuries in recent years and dipped outside the world’s Top 500 last month, bounced back with a strong run at the ITF World Tennis Tour tournament on home soil to beat Borges 6-3 6-3 and claim his first professional title since winning on the ATP Challenger Tour in Campinas, Brazil in 2017.
The victory was Elias’ first professional title on a hard court since 2011, and just his fifth on the surface overall.
The tournament also featured another player who has ranked in the upper echelons of the sport in former world No. 25 Mischa Zverev, but the German’s latest comeback attempt was thwarted by a back injury as he retired from his second round contest with eventual runner-up Borges while trailing 6-3 3-1.
Meanwhile, Lithuanian Laurynas Grigelis won his first title on a hard court in five years at M15 Monastir in Tunisia.
The 29-year-old Lithuanian defeated Slovenian Tom Kocevar-Desman 6-1 7-6 in the final for his first hard court triumph since winning in Italy in 2015, maintaining his record of winning at least one title on the ITF World Tennis Tour every year since 2012.
Grigelis now has 25 ITF singles to his name, including 14 on clay, nine on hard court and two on carpet.
Uladzimir Ignatik won the other men’s tournament taking place on the ITF World Tennis Tour last week, defeating Czech Jan Satral to win the title at M25 Pardubice.
The 30-year-old Belarusian won 6-3 6-2 to secure his first professional title since winning an ATP Challenger tournament in Andria in 2017. It was his 23rd professional singles title and his first on clay since 2016.
