Canada and USA reach Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup Juniors Finals
Canada and the United States became the first nations to reach the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Juniors by Gainbridge and Davis Cup Juniors Finals following successful showings at North/Central America and Caribbean Final Qualifying.
The two nations will now compete at the Finals of both prestigious competitions and battle to be crowned the best boys’ and girls’ teams on the planet in the 16-and-under age category.
The United States are the reigning Billie Jean King Cup Juniors champions after topping the podium for a record-extending seventh time at the Megasaray Tennis Academy in Antalya, Türkiye in November.
It proved a productive week for the Americans in November as their boys also made it to the final before succumbing to Brazil as the USA eyed a clean sweep – incidentally, they were the last nation to achieve the feat in 2014.
Canada, meanwhile, have only been crowned Davis Cup Juniors champions once, in 2015, when Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov showcased their immense potential on the global junior stage. Canada are yet to go the distance in Billie Jean King Cup Juniors.
However, opportunity will knock later this year after a stellar showing in Final Qualifying, which took place in Orlando, although in both Davis Cup Juniors and Billie Jean King Cup Juniors, USA advance as regional champions.
Taking place simultaneously was ITF World Junior Tennis Final Qualifying in the North/Central America and Caribbean region, which is the ITF’s premier team competition in the 14-and-under age category.
The United States and Canada progressed to the Finals, which will take place in Prostejov, Czech Republic from 7-12 August, in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.
The United States have a rich history in the competition with their boys’ and girls’ teams lifting silverware on numerous occasions since the tournament’s inception in 1991, something which Canada are yet to do.
Canada’s girls will, however, advance to the Finals as regional champions after overcoming the United States in Orlando so hopes will be high for a promising showing in Prostejov.
Together with the United States, Canada’s girls join Japan, Korea, Rep. and Australia in qualifying for the Finals, whereas Japan, Pakistan, Korea, Rep. and Hong Kong were the teams to advance from Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying in the boys' draw.
