Cabrera and Perez deliver Australian double
Lizette Cabrera picked up the biggest title of her career from her first ITF World Tennis Tour singles final in almost three years with victory at W80 Granby.
The 21-year-old Australian was the only non-Canadian to reach the semi-finals, where she stormed back to beat the one remaining seed, Katherine Sebov, 3-6 6-1 6-0 to set up a final clash with 16-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez, who edged compatriot Francoise Abanda 6-3 5-7 7-6(6) to reach back-to-back professional finals.
W25 Gatineau champion Fernandez was denied her second singles title in as many weeks, however, as Cabrera collected her third – and first since 2016 – with a 6-1 6-4 victory that saw her break back into the WTA top 200 at 195 for the first time since August 2018. For Fernandez, there was the consolation of breaking into the top 300 for the first time, at No.257.
It was a good week for Australian women on the ITF World Tennis Tour’s hard courts, with Ellen Perez winning an all-Aussie W60 Ashland, KY final when compatriot Zoe Hives was forced retire with illness while trailing 6-2 3-2.
Meanwhile at W60 Prague, Tamara Korpatsch collected the eighth ITF World Tennis Tour singles title of her career – all of which have come on clay. The German 24-year-old moved up to a career-high ranking of No.115 after dropping just one set en route to victory, beating home hope Denisa Allertova 7-5 6-3 in the final.
In the men’s game, the Ratiwatana and Sabanov twins’ fine form continued with further doubles success. At M25 Nonthanburi in Thailand, Sanchai and Sonchat Ratiwatana twice fought back from a set down to claim their fourth title of the season, while in Italy Ivan and Matej Sabanov collected their third title in as many weeks – including one ATP Challenger crown - at M25 Pontevedra, their sixth tournament win of the year.
Five players celebrated their maiden ITF World Tennis Tour singles title wins in Week 30 – Maja Chwalinska (W25 Bytom), Joanne Zuger (W15 Les Contamines-Montjoie), Carlos Alcaraz (M25 Denia), Christian Langmo (M15 Cancun) and Nikita Mashtakov (M15 Telavi) – while two players making use of their ITF ranking went on to reach finals.
Switzerland’ Simona Waltert reached her sixth final of the year at M25 Horb in Germany, beating fellow ITF-ranking entrant Oana Georgeta Simion in the semi-finals, but fell to Lea Boskovic 6-4 0-6 6-1 in the final.
For Ukraine’s Vladyslav Orlov, a 6-4 6-0 loss to Yuta Shimizu at M25 Nonthaburi means the wait for a first professional singles title goes on after reaching the third final of his career.
