Brazil back on top of the Beach Tennis world

12 Aug 2018

Brazil turned the tables on rival Italy to take home the ITF Beach Tennis World Team Championship for the second time.

In a repeat of last year's final, the No. 2 seeds were out for revenge and no matter what Italy produced, the four-time champions were simply no match for the Brazilians.

The confidence and belief to win within the Brazilian team was evident from the outset, with experienced pair Joana Cortez and Rafaella Miller holding their nerve to defeat equal world No. 1's Federica Bacchetta and Giulia Gasparri in three tough sets, 6-2 4-6 6-3.

"It's always very difficult to play against them - they are always changing their strategy. Bacchetta is very good on the court and very strong mentally so we targeted Gasparri for most of the match. We had many opportunities where we focused on the right strategy to win this game," Cortez said.

Arguably the most experienced player in Moscow, this is Cortez's second World Team Championship title.

"I love playing this event," he continued. "It's different. I feel the people in Brazil shouting for us. I really enjoy playing with the team. The team is very united which is important for us."

With a 1-0 lead, the men's pairing of Thales Santos and Marcus Ferreira simply had one job to secure victory: win.

And for Santos, there was no other option.

"I think all the team knew that something special would come. Everybody was confident, everybody was really together and [this morning], I could see the victory in the eyes of all my team," he said.

A straight-sets victory over Italy's Michele Cappelletti and Luca Carli was no easy feat but for team captain-player, Vinicius Font, there was a level of confidence even before the match started."

"At this moment, we are in a much better position than they are. I know they are not playing the best," he said.

An emotional Font was brought to tears as the realisation of becoming World Team champions set in.

"I can tell you that it means a lot to us and for everybody that is here. There was a lot of people that doubted us, but I had no doubt at any moment," he explained.

Having been a point away from elimination against Germany earlier in the week, victory for Brazil means big things for beach tennis back home.

"All the people are waiting for us to celebrate because beach tennis is really important in Brazil. They are really investing a lot in the sport, they really trust that this sport can be huge and I'm very happy for this," Santos said.

In the meantime, the majority of Team Brazil will celebrate long into the night here in Moscow. As for captain Font: "Well, today is Father's Day in Brazil so it's a hell of a day for me."
