Wong becomes first man from Hong Kong to post Grand Slam match-win
Coleman Wong has made history by becoming the first man from Hong Kong to post a Grand Slam match-win in the Open Era after defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic in the opening round at the US Open.
On his Grand Slam main draw debut, Wong prevailed in straight sets, winning 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(4) in just under two-and-a-half hours, to set up a second round showdown with Australia’s Adam Walton.
The 21-year-old had already become the first player from Hong Kong to reach the main draw at a Grand Slam since 1988 when he successfully negotiated three rounds of qualifying last week. It was the seventh time he had entered qualifying for a Grand Slam.
Wong has tasted success at the US Open previously, having won the boys’ doubles title alongside France’s Max Westphal in 2021, while he also reached the semi-finals of the singles at the 2022 US Open Junior Championships.
Wong is another player to have received financial assistance through the ITF-operated Grand Slam Player Development Programme to help with his ongoing development, while he continues to progress along the player pathway. Wong is now ranked No. 174 in the ATP Rankings.
During the 2022, the ITF produced All on the Line: Coleman Wong – a behind the scenes video which followed Wong as he competed at J300 Roehampton and the Junior Championships, Wimbledon. Watch the video here.
