Watson wins W100 title in Vancouver
Britain’s Heather Watson returned to Canada with some unfinished business on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
A runner-up in 2018 in Vancouver despite having been up a set, the Brit returned to Vancouver and did not drop a set all week to secure her second singles title of 2019 after staging an impressive comeback from 5-1 down in the opening set to beat Sara Sorribes Tormoa 7-5 6-4.
Her W100 tournament win leaves Watson on the brink of a return to the WTA Top 100 for the first time since January, climbing nine places to 101.
Caroline Dolehide also won big last week Competing at the W60 Concord tournament in Massachusetts, USA, Dolehide contested an all-American final with Ann Li where a 6-3 7-5 win saw her pick up a first singles title since an April 2018 win in Florida.
For the second weekend in succession in Kenya, tennis fans in Burundi were hopeful of seeing their first singles champion crowned in professional tennis as Sada Nahimana followed up her first singles final appearance the previous week by once again coming through the rounds to set up a repeat of that final with Mahak Jain.
A run of comfortable straight sets wins, after dropping her only set of the week in a first round win over second seed Tiffany William, would have left her confident of becoming a history maker having been runner-up in the previous encounter but Jain, the top seed, would once again prove to be too strong for her fellow 18-year-old, running out a 6-1 6-1 winner.
The back-to-back titles in Kenya were also the first of Jain's professional career and rounded off a successful two weeks in Kenya, which also saw her claim her first doubles title on Saturday.
Jain’s victories at the W15 Nairobi tournament saw her become one of five players last week to come away with both singles and doubles titles. Joining her were Amina Anshba at W15 Moscow, Jazmin Ortenzi at W15 La Paz, Oscar Jose Gutierrez at M15 Vigo and Vladyslav Orlov at M15 Irpin.
Regular winners on the Tour in 2019, the Huertas Del Pino brothers, Arklon and Conner, collected their eighth career title together when completing a hat-trick of title wins in consecutive weeks in Serbia. This latest title at the M15 Novi Sad tournament was also their sixth of the year.
There was, however, no such luck though in Poland for another pair of brothers. Competing at the M25 Bydgoszcz tournament, Australians Adam and Jason Taylor went down 6-3 6-4 in their second final of 2019 to top seeds Vladyslav Manafov and David Pichler, leaving the brothers still searching for a first title win since winning the last of their four titles back in March 2018.
First time singles title winners
Nearly half of men’s tournaments last week produced a career first singles title winner, while Andreea Prisacariu was the sole first-time winner in the women's events.
