Vink seals French Riviera Open title
Niels Vink claimed his seventh quad singles title of 2019 on Friday’s penultimate day of the French Riviera Open, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, to make it back-to-back tournament victories on French soil.
The ITF 2 event comes to an end on Saturday at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy with Gordon Reid taking on Takuya Miki in the men’s singles final, while Yui Kamiji plays doubles partner Jordanne Whiley for the women’s singles title.
World No. 6 Vink followed up last week’s Ile de Re title with a 7-5 6-0 victory over Asian Para Games gold medallist Kyu-Seung Kim, beating the Korean second seed for the second time in two meetings so far this season.
However, later in the day it was Kim that came out on top when he and Vink met again in the quad doubles final. In their first tournament together Kim and Britain’s James Shaw completed a 6-4 6-4 win in the title decider Andrea Silvestrone and Vink.
Reid and Miki set for men’s final
Reid, runner-up in the men’s singles in 2017 before taking the title last year, reached his third successive final in Biot after wrapping up a 6-1 7-6(4) victory over Belgian fourth seed Jef Vandorpe.
Reid’s bid to successfully retain the title he won last year against Nicolas Peifer sees the world No. 8 now take on Japan’s Takuya Miki, a player Reid has never lost to in 14 career meetings.
It’s more than two years since Miki last played Reid and the Japanese second seed booked his place in his fifth final in the space of six tournaments with a 6-2 6-2 semi-final win over third seed Martin de la Puente.
While de la Puente and Vandorpe bowed out in the singles semi-finals they combined with great effect in the men’s doubles final to seal their first title as a partnership. The second seeds completed a 6-4 6-4 victory over defending champions Daniel Caverzaschi and Reid.
Kamiji to play Whiley for women’s title
Jordanne Whiley booked her place in her latest singles final since returning to international competition after maternity leave. The current world No. 5 and second seed will now play top seed and her doubles partner Yui Kamiji, wth the duo having already secured the women's doubles title in Biot.
Whiley's only previous completed match against Chinese semi-ifinal opponent Hui Min Huang came at May’s Israel Open, where Whiley won their quarter-final 6-3 6-2. The former world No. 3 repeated that performance on Friday, securing another 6-3 6-2 victory.
World No. 2 Kamiji now plays Whiley for the third time this season after a comfortable 6-0 6-3 semi-final win against Dutchwoman Michaela Spaanstra. Kamiji and Whiley's previous two singles matches this season were in the Wimbledon quarter-finals and the semi-finals of the US Open USTA Wheelchair Championships in St. Louis.
The women’s doubles final brought nine-time Grand Slam champions Kamiji and Whiley their first title together since winning their fourth successive Wimbledon title in July 2017.
