Van Assche wins all-French battle for milestone maiden pro title
Luca Van Assche is becoming accustomed to beating his countrymen to achieve early career milestones.
The 17-year-old Frenchman – who became just the 14th homegrown player to win the Roland Garros junior title after beating Arthur Fils in Paris last June – navigated another compatriot this weekend to win a landmark maiden men’s singles title on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
In fact, Van Assche beat four fellow Frenchman en route to singles victory at M15+H Bagnoles de l’Orne - including world No. 452 Corentin Dennolly 7-5 6-3 in the title match. Van Assche's singles win gave him a double triumph, having combined with Dennolly to win his first doubles title at the tournament on Saturday following their victory over French pair Ronan Joncour and Mandresy Rakotomalala.
In winning the title Van Assche, who made his professional men’s debut at M15 Villers Les Nancy in November 2019, claimed his first men’s crown at the 28th attempt – three months after he reached his first men’s final at M25 Toulouse. As a result, he climbed six spots to a career-high No. 495 in the ATP rankings on Monday.
An impressive junior, Van Assche climbed to the summit of the boys’ rankings in July after winning back-to-back junior titles at Roland Garros and J2 Haskovo in Bulgaria, before bringing the curtain down on his boy’s career during the British grass court season with a quarter-final run at J1 Roehampton ahead of a first round exit at Wimbledon.
Seven men's tournaments concluded on the ITF men's World Tennis Tour over the weekend. View all the weekend’s results here.
