USA edge Czech Republic to claim third straight Junior Fed Cup title

30 Sep 2019

USA claimed their third successive Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas title as they overcame Czech Republic in front of a packed Championship court on home soil in Lake Nona, USA.

American duo Connie Ma and Robin Montgomery defeated Linda Noskova and Barbora Palicova 6-2 7-5 to seal the USA’s sixth Junior Fed Cup title overall, much to the delight of onlookers.

It was a second Junior Fed Cup for Ma, having been part of the winning team in Budapest in 2018, and the California native gave the USA the perfect start to the day, wasting little time in beating Barbora Palicova 6-1 6-3.

Ma has found herself very much the leader of the USA team throughout the tournament and, after the match, her captain Jamea Jackson was full of praise for her young star.

“They were all amazing today but for me, Connie is the MVP,” enthused Jackson. “She has grown so much and blossomed since last year in Budapest and this week was undefeated all week. She’s been a real rock for this team.”

Speaking to ITFtennis.com, Ma claimed she was struggling to absorb the magnitude of the victory. “It feels amazing, especially for me to win it two years in a row. There are no words to describe it. The atmosphere today was insane."

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the USA though, as Linda Noskova handed out a first defeat of the tournament to Katrina Scott, winning 6-2 3-6 6-3 to propel Czech Republic back into the tie and send the match to a deciding doubles.

The pairing of Connie Ma and Robin Montgomery has served the Americans well this week and the two raced out of the blocks in their quest for glory in the decider, taking the first set 6-2 and leaving the Czechs looking somewhat shell-shocked. The second set looked to be heading in the opposite direction, with the Czech’s leading 5-3 and starting to find their feet.

But Ma and Montgomery would not lie down and the American duo showed incredible resilience to battle back to 5-5, before breaking again and setting up Ma to serve out the match. As she has done all week, Ma appeared the epitome of calm as she patiently traded ground strokes with the Czech pair, allowing Montgomery to pounce at the net, seal the set 7-5 and hand USA the Junior Fed Cup title.

The hosts began their day in search of a sweep in both the Junior Fed Cup and Junior Davis Cup, with their boys’ team heading into the final as favourites owing to their No.1 seeding.

However, it was to be Japan’s day in Orlando with a stunning doubles performance giving the Japanese their second Junior Davis Cup title.
