Trevisan boasts career-high ranking after ending two-year title wait
Italy’s Martina Trevisan woke up this morning boasting a career-high world ranking after ending her long wait to lift silverware on the ITF World Tennis Tour with victory at W80 Valencia.
In fact, it was almost two years to the day since Trevisan topped the podium at W25 Santa Margherita Di Pula, but returned to trophy-winning ways in style with the biggest title of her career.
The 27-year-old left-hander recovered from a set down in the final to defeat Hungary’s Dalma Galfi, having also required three sets to overcome Spain’s Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov in the quarter-finals and Oksana Selekhmeteva of Russia in the semis.
Trevisan, who last week reached the final at Karlsruhe – the WTA $125,000 Series event, now occupies No. 66 in the world rankings, having momentarily slipped out of the top 100 earlier this year.
Elsewhere, there were also a host of seasonal firsts at $25k level, with China’s Saisai Zheng, Jesika Maleckova of Czech Republic, Colombian Emiliana Arango and Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands all sealing their maiden titles of 2021.
Like Trevisan, Zheng, who in March 2020 reached a career-high ranking of No. 34, had not been crowned a champion anywhere since 2019, but is now back on the winning trail following success at W60+H Caldas da Rainha.
Similarly, Maleckova was also without a title since 2019, a campaign during which she claimed victory at both W25 Olomouc and W25 Prague, but by overcoming compatriot Aneta Kladikova, topped the podium at W25 Jablonec Nad Nisou.
The trend continued, with Hogenkamp claiming her first trophy since 2019 as well. The 29-year-old defeated Zimbabwe’s Valeria Bhunu in the final – the only clash of the tournament during which she dropped a set.
There had been an even longer wait for Arango, who won her first ITF World Tennis Tour since 2017 with success at W25 Medellin. The 20-year-old, a former junior world No. 8, dispatched Olympic bronze medallist Laura Pigossi in the final to claim her second professional title.
Elsehwere, there were victories at $15k level for Thailand’s Anchisa Chanta at W15 Monastir, Italy’s Chiara Catini at W15 Sozopol, Russia’s Anastasia Zolotareva at W15 Cairo and Switzerland’s Alina Granwehr at W15 Dijon.
