What a couple of weeks it has been for Australia’s Talia Gibson as her dream run at Indian Wells continues this evening when she faces Linda Noskova of Czechia for a place in the semi-finals.

The 21-year-old qualifier has recorded three successive victories against Top 20 opponents at Indian Wells, with her defeat of world No. 7 Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16 her first against a Top 10 player.

Prior to Indian Wells, Gibson had never defeated a player ranked within the Top 50. All nine of her previous attempts ended in defeat, but that all changed with victory over world No. 41 Ann Li in the first round.

Wins against world No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round, Denmark’s Clara Tauson, who is ranked No. 17 in the world, in the third and then Paolini followed – all after navigating two rounds of qualifying.

Gibson is now bidding to become the first qualifier to reach the semi-finals at Indian Wells since 1989 when fellow Australian Jenny Byrne advanced to the final where she lost to Bulgaria’s Manuela Maleeva.

Her exploits in Tennis Paradise mean Gibson will break the Top 100 of the WTA Rankings for the first time once they are updated on Monday. She is currently ranked No. 67 in the WTA live rankings.

Gibson’s path to this stage of her career has very much been fuelled by the ITF World Tennis Tour. She has 12 ITF World Tennis Tour titles to her name, while last month she won her sixth at W75 level – at W75 Brisbane.

She won three titles in 2025 – at W50 Nantes, W75 Granby and W75 Sydney – putting her joint-third on the list for most ITF World Tennis Tour titles won at W50, W75 and W100 level in 2025. These events are considered equal to ATP Challengers.
