Teenager Khan claims first ITF men's title
Teenager Zane Khan won his first professional title on the ITF World Tennis Tour after triumphing on Indian soil at M15 Lucknow.
The 19-year-old American – a former junior world No. 16 – overcame 33-year-old home favourite Saketh Myneni 7-6(3) 6-3 in the final to climb 15 spots in the rankings to a career-high No. 831.
Khan, whose junior highlights include winning four titles and finishing runner-up at the prestigious Orange Bowl junior championships in 2018, could celebrate the scalp of a player ranked almost 400 places above him in Myneni – both a former world No. 137 and Davis Cup player for India. There was some consolation for the Indian, who claimed the doubles title as a wild card entry alongside partner Yuki Bhambri.
Another promising former junior, former boy’s world No. 5 Yu Hsiou Hsu, improved his win-loss record for the year to 19-3 on the men’s professional tour after triumphing at M15 Sharm El Sheikh for the second time in 2021.
The 21-year-old from Chinese Taipei, who also won at the tournament in early February, collected his fourth ITF title after beating Italian Edoardo Eremin 6-3 6-2 in the final.
Elsewhere, Russian Alen Avidzba won his second ITF title - and first since June 2018 -after defeating Frenchman Lucas Poullain 6-2 6-2 in the final at M25 Faro.
The 21-year-old Russian’s five victories last week were his first match-wins since he beat Ernests Gulbis in the first round of qualifying for the ATP 500 event in St. Petersberg in October.
Japan’s Renta Tokuda, 22, won his sixth ITF title after triumphing at M15 Monastir with a 7-5 5-7 6-4 victory over Spaniard Carlos Sanchez Jover. In the semi-finals, Tokuda avenged his loss to Great Britain’s Stuart Parker, who had beaten him en route to the title at the same event the previous week.
Vitaliy Sachko won his second ITF singles title - and first outside his homeland – at M15 Bratislava. The 23-year-old Ukrainian, whose previous win came at M15 Chornomorsk in 2019, overcame Frenchman Jurgen Briand 6-1 2-6 7-6(3) in the title match in Slovakia.
Dragos Nicolae Madaras also won a second ITF singles title, to add to the maiden crown he picked up in Estonia in 2018. The 23-year-old Swede won his second clay title at M15 Antalya after Serbia’s Miljan Zekic was forced to retire at the business end of the final with Madaras leading 2-6 7-6(6) 6-5.
