Superkits support junior beach tennis in South Africa

02 Dec 2020

Tennis South Africa have announced plans to launch a Junior Beach Tennis Programme after receiving eight Superkits from the International Tennis Federation's Global Development Partner, SANDEVER.

The kits, which include all the necessary equipment (one court, four paddles and six balls) to allow nations to start playing, were sent out earlier this year as part of the ITF's Beach Tennis Global Development Programme.

Two hundred Superkits have been produced and so far 40 nations and one ITF Regional Training Centre have applied to receive them. This includes 27 nations who are not currently part of the ITF Beach Tennis Tour.

In South Africa, the kits will be distributed to venues that have been working on the development of beach tennis and where the equipment can be used to help promote the sport within the country.

Tennis South Africa's Beach Tennis Manager Iain Smith said: “We are very pleased to receive this generous contribution from the ITF and SANDEVER as equipment has been one of the barriers to participation, with interested individuals not yet willing to invest totally in terms of purchasing equipment.

“Over the past few weeks close to 150 new players have been introduced to the sport in one area alone, therefore this donation of equipment will be of great help.

"Demand will drive the continual increase and Tennis South Africa is looking to roll out a junior programme in the new year with a goal being to participate at the Junior World Championships.

"In addition, Tennis South Africa is also rolling out a league that is time-based and allows players to enjoy regular activity.”

The ITF Beach Tennis Tour comprises over 300 tournaments in 37 countries, with the sport's flagship competitions including the ITF Beach Tennis World Championships and the ITF Beach Tennis World Cup, as well as regional Championships in Europe, Africa and the Americas.
